Military Retirement Calculators Help Plan For The Future

April 21, 2008 by HART (1-800-HART)

People in the military usually have a much different retirement plan than ordinary civilians so they should use a special military retirement calculator when planning for an ideal retirement. Military retirement calculators should provide information that will help each person make important decisions. Usually military people are eligible for retirement earlier than civilians. This means that they might have to save more money faster to have a great retirement or plan to find another job after their retirement from the military. People in the military should consider these factors when working with a military retirement calculator to make their plans for the future.

A military retirement calculator is usually available from the credit unions and banks that provide service to military people while on active duty. These institutions usually continue service to these people after they leave active duty as well. The military personnel planning for retirement should contact these credit unions or other financial institutions to access a military retirement calculator. The institutions that specialize in service to people in the military are usually keenly aware of the special circumstances of their clients. When military people start to plan for retirement, a military retirement calculator should make some important calculations that will make for the most perfect plans.

A Military Retirement Calculator Will Provide Important Figures

People in the military usually live very unusual lives, and these people also have many unusual benefits. Their plans for retirement will be affected by their unusual lives in some ways. Many people in the military move around during their careers so they do not always have a place that feels like a permanent home. After retirement, military people will have to make decisions about their permanent residence. They might want to consider proximity to a large military facility where they might do their shopping to save extra money. Military bases might provide them extra savings on car repair and gardening as well as groceries. These factors might be considered when using a military retirement calculator.

A military retirement calculator can be a great tool, but it is only as good as the figures entered for calculations. Each person using one of these great devices should make sure that they get their facts and figures straight before using a military retirement calculator. A calculator will not know that you are eligible for certain benefits based on military service. The calculator can handle different sets of circumstances depending on the facts provided. The calculator will not figure out that you want a beachfront cottage which might be more expensive, but a savvy person will find out the figures for this type of residence to use when making calculations.

What to Expect with your Aging Body

April 19, 2008 by HART (1-800-HART)

You cannot reverse the signs of aging but you can certainly make the process more comfortable. When you know what to expect, you can take steps in advance in preparation of it. Growing old is more than just wrinkles and gray hair. There are a few more aches and pains to go along with them!

The oldest documented living person was 122 years old. That is quite a life expectancy! Many people are living longer thanks to better health, medications and living conditions. At the turn of the century, the average life expectancy was around 55 years of age. My, how society has improved … with age of course!

You should expect that your body is going to show those signs of aging. However, you don’t have to take them lying down. You can take as many preventative measures as possible to greatly slow the process. Many older adults are successful. The key to success is a realistic view of old age, a healthy diet and of course, safe exercise for endurance, flexibility, strength and weight.

Brain power

Many older adults worry most about losing their minds to Alzheimer’s or dementia. As long as you eat healthy, exercise and challenge your brain frequently, you should be able to avoid this problem. Keep in mind that some forgetfulness is natural though!

The thinning process

As you age, there are quite a few things on and in your body that tend to thin. Your hair gets thinner as well as your skin. You lose a bit of elasticity as a result. Repeated sun block and moisturizers help a lot.

Your retina thins out affecting vision and your auditory canal thins affecting your hearing. Some blood vessels like capillaries thin, which along with thinner skin, makes you more prone to bruising.

Slowing down

Many body processes start to slow down. You digestion slows which may be the reason why you get heartburn or indigestion. In addition, your metabolism slows which means gaining weight, unless you keep up with exercise to burn calories.

Your joints, muscles and bones contribute to the slowing down process. Bones become less dense and weaker while your joints get stiffer and your muscles weaker. This slows down reflexes. Only through exercise can you greatly slow down this slow body downturn.

Other body issues

Some older adults may experience incontinence because bladder muscles weaken. Sex may be a problem thanks to menopause or erectile dysfunction. Sleep becomes disrupted and you may not get as much as you need to rejuvenate your body and mind. Heart, kidneys and bladder also work less efficiently so you have to compensate with better diet and exercise.

All in all, growing older seems like a raw deal all around. However, that is far from the truth. Many older adults have a great time in retirement and love being older and wiser. A lifetime a good habits will buy you a better lifestyle in retirement. Just remember that it is never too late to adopt healthier habits like a better diet and exercise.

Installing a Kitchen Sink

April 15, 2008 by HART (1-800-HART)

Installing a new kitchen sink is not the most difficult do-it-yourself home project. But it will take all day, usually. Take it step by step and you can’t go wrong.

First, you’ll have to disconnect any and all attachments to the sink except possibly the faucet, unless you plan to re-use it.

Before that can be done it’s necessary to turn off any water valves. In most kitchens a simple turn of the under-the-sink valves will do the trick. In others, it may be necessary to turn off the main valve for the house.

Next, kick off the circuit breaker that protects the circuit for the garbage disposal unit. Don’t rely only on the above-the-sink wall switch.

Put a bucket under the pipes to catch any trapped water, along with a few towels. There’s always some water that manages to miss the bucket.

Now it’s safe to disconnect all wires, hoses, pipes and water lines that attach to the sink. That includes any dishwasher line and wires for the garbage disposal, along with any line to a separate hand sprayer.

The kitchen sink can be secured to the cabinetry in a number of ways. In some cases there are mounting clips that need to be removed. In most installations, plumber’s putty will have been used to adhere the sink into position. Even with all clips or nuts removed, it will be a challenge to get the sink loose.

Work a stiff utility knife into the line between the sink and cabinet. If you work from above, you’ll have better leverage, but a higher risk of slipping and damaging the counter. Some topside work will usually be necessary in any case to remove any old caulk. Once that’s done, the hardest part is over.

There’s still some unpleasant clean up to do, since it’s necessary to remove any existing caulk and/or plumber’s putty from the parts that held the sink. It’s important to have a clean, smooth surface before placing the new sink into position. That will require a combination of putty knife use and sanding.

Install any separate strainer into the new sink before putting it into position. Some new sinks have them already secured. Plumber’s putty is used to seal it. More putty will be needed around the rim of the opening the sink sets into.

Spread a 1/4 inch bead and set the sink onto it. With a wooden cuticle removal tool or ice cream stick, scrape any excess off before it has time to dry. Remove any small remainder with a very slightly damp sponge. Repeat the operation with caulk along the back and side edges if there are any areas where water might seep in.

Allow the sink to set untouched for a few hours to give everything time to solidify. Now is a good time to attach any mounting clips, while things are still somewhat flexible.

In the meantime, you can measure all hoses, pipes and other attachments to ensure they all fit well with the new sink. Trim as needed. Now is a good time to inspect any rubber hoses for possible replacement.

Replace the garbage disposal unit. Then, re-attach all hoses and pipes, using Teflon plumber’s tape. Open the water valve slowly and test for leaks. Then turn on the circuit breaker for the garbage disposal unit and test.

There’s No Better Time To Start Planning For Retirement

April 15, 2008 by HART (1-800-HART)

Nobody wants to work forever. Most people plan to retire at some point in their lives, usually around fifty or so. Planning for retirement is something that should be done way ahead of that point, however, and there’s no better time to start than the present. If you don’t know how to plan for this time, there is help available. You can go visit a financial planner, you can talk to your employer about your 401K if it’s available, and you can even go out and buy some financial planning software if you want to go it alone. Planning for retirement can be fun, and it should be. After all, this is the time you are supposed to lay back and relax after years of hard work and looking forward to that time can be the motivation most of us need to get started with our planning.

Pay Yourself

One of the best ways you can go about planning for retirement is to pay yourself whenever you get paid. That means that if you get paid biweekly, you should set a little aside from each paycheck just as if you were a bill. Just like you pay your car note, your electricity company and any other bill payments each month, if you treat your own savings like you’re paying a bill, you won’t miss a payment and that money will quickly add up. You should plan to set aside at least ten percent of your paycheck and a little more if you’re able. The more you save, the more you’ll have when it comes time to retire and you’ll be much happier because you actually did save.

Financial Planners

If you don’t know how to save, or don’t think you have the time, visit a financial planner. A financial planner is an expert at planning for retirement. He or she will look at your current income, minus your current bills and will plan a savings plan you can actually stick with. They will also look into things such as mutual funds and other low risk investment opportunities to help you save even more. Sure, you’ll have to pay a financial planner but it’s better than not having any money at all when it actually does come time to retire.

One of the best things you can do is buy one of the money management programs for your computer. These programs will allow you to see just where your money goes and how much you actually have to save. These programs make planning for retirement very easy. And again, there’s no better time to start than right now. Even if you haven’t saved a dime until now, if you start today there’s a good chance you’ll have just enough to enjoy yourself when it comes time to exit the working world after many years of dedication and hard work.

Tuscany (Italian: Toscana) is one of the twenty regions of Italy. It has an area of 22,990 km² and a population of about 3.6 million inhabitants. The regional capital is Florence.

Tuscany is known for its landscapes and its artistic legacy. Six Tuscan localities have been made UNESCO protected sites: the historical center of Florence (1982), the historical center of Siena (1995), the square of the Cathedral of Pisa (1987), the historical center of San Gimignano (1990), the historical center of Pienza (1996) and the Val d’Orcia (2004).

Everything in Florence is art. Shopping for leather goods? Jewelry? Food? Here, such things aren’t merely utilitarian or even decorative personal items. In this major Tuscan city, shopping amounts to searching for a work of genius. And, in Florence, that’s not hard to find.

Mercato Centrale

800px-mercato_centrale_firenze.JPG

Formed from a major urban project in the mid-19th century, Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo offers food and small goods shopping in a classic Florentine atmosphere. A two-story structure of cast iron and glass, there are ten classical arches to welcome visitors. Souvenir shops around the building make sure you don’t go home without something to remember the trip.

The market offers food that are works of agricultural art, while providing an atmosphere that is itself a stellar combination of architecture and social display. Vendors here sell everything from simple meats and fish to an array of cheeses. Check out the wild boar salami for a very different tasting sandwich. Visitors who want to make themselves a snack on the spot will find the freshest ingredients, many straight from local farms.

The market sellers also offer a wide variety of pre-made take-out foods that will have you refreshed and on your way again in no time. Just want some nuts? Mercato Centrale has the best. Looking for a little wine to take home? You’ll find a selection that probably will get consumed long before you leave. Best of all there are free samples of a variety of foods and wines so you can’t go wrong.

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

Looking for a fascinating new perfume? The Pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella at Via Delle Scala is your best bet. Unlike what the name suggests in the U.S., this pharmacy offers not drugs but a range of perfumes, herbals, soaps and much more.

Begun in the 16th century by a group of Dominican Friars, it has been doing business ever since. Try some of the almond hand cream and you’ll have to have it imported the rest of your life. Ditto if you smell the pomegranate soap, Sapone al Melograno. Unusually calm for busy Florence, you can find any sweet smelling scent imaginable in this combination of museum and store.

Mercato Nuovo

The open air market called Mercato Nuovo, offers leather goods, silk scarves, souvenirs and a variety of other items. New Market, in Italian, here simply means it’s less than 1,000 years old. In this case, the building was completed in 1551. It’s been selling outstanding goods ever since. Looking for a genuine Italian leather jacket? You’ll find one for a good deal less here than at the tonier high-end shops. The perfect purse can be found at one of these stalls and all the vendors bargain.

Ponte Vecchio

Old Bridge, built in 1345 and modified little since, is one of the many interesting sights of Florence. But shoppers will be glad to know it’s also a central location for jewelry you can’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s something high-end from Bucelatti or just a simple, unique design, there’s something near the Ponte Vecchio to suit all tastes and budgets.

Approach shopping in Florence like a passionate art collector and you’ll find plenty to satisfy even the most discriminating taste.

Taking Preventative Measures Ensures a Long, Healthy Retirement

April 7, 2008 by HART (1-800-HART)

It all boils down to preventative maintenance in order to enjoy a long, healthy retirement. Being proactive about your health includes regular health screenings for cancer, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Your lifestyle such as diet, exercise and sleep habits also play a huge part in staying healthy.

So what exactly do you need to do in order to maintain your health and enjoy life to the fullest? Let’s find out:

Lifestyle Choices

Take a look at your lifestyle and see where you can improve. A proper diet is essential and getting the proper vitamin and minerals can go a long way towards preventing illness and disease. If you haven’t already, keep your salt and fat intake to a minimum. Eating plenty of dark leafy vegetables, fibrous fruits, low fat dairy, lean meats and fish and whole grains will definitely go a long way in maintaining a healthy body.

Exercise is essential. If you are overweight, you need to adopt a healthier diet and incorporate exercise such as walking, a great cardiovascular activity. Yoga, Pilates and strength training are definite body boosters. If your budget allows, consult with a personal trainer or get a gym membership as an incentive to stay fit. Join a walking club or exercise class.

Drinking in moderation and abstaining from tobacco products is a definite health positive. Smoking is linked not only to cancer but also to high blood pressure and a number of other health risks.

Regular Dental and Health Check-Ups

Poor dental health leads to a number of health risks, so be sure to schedule regular maintenance check-ups for teeth cleaning and yearly x-rays. Fillings, bridge work and other dental devices should be regularly maintained as well. Gum disease and tooth decay are major contributors and indicators of something more serious.

Keep up to date on vaccinations and flu shots. Many seniors die every year from the flu because they did not get the flu shot. By becoming vaccinated, you can greatly build your resistance against this debilitating illness. Also, keep in mind that tetanus and diphtheria vaccinations should occur every ten years. In certain areas, you may also need the hepatitis vaccine as well. Make sure that you stay up to date on these inoculations.

Yearly physicals are also essential. At these check-ups you will want to inquire about the preventative screening for cancer. In addition, there are blood tests to determine diabetes, anemia, cholesterol and more. In order to stay healthy, these screening should be done as a preventative measure. If you catch an illness early, there is a greater chance of overcoming it. Don’t neglect your eyes either. Some illnesses have been caught early and cured due to regular eye exams.

Don’t be afraid to seek counseling with various experts in case you have any non-life threatening health issues like impotence, depression or menopause. Sometimes, you just need a helpful push in the right direction with guidance from a nutritionist, personal trainer or even a homeopathic physician. By being proactive in your health, you can ensure that your retirement years are truly golden.

Retirement Life Planning Makes Life More Fulfilling

April 2, 2008 by HART (1-800-HART)

For people at or approaching retirement age they have spent many years planning their financial future to insure they will have the funds needed to make it through their retirement years. Most people however, have forgot about retirement life planning for the future in terms of what they will do with themselves with no job to go to every day. There are only so many projects around the house that need done and after several months of backbreaking work in the yard, some joking think about going back to work so they can relax.

While this may seem like a ludicrous idea since they spent their entire lives working so they can retire, finding a way to occupy the time by passing on experience to others can be a helpful part of retirement life planning. For those that have yet to hang up their spurs, it may be time to consider what can be done in the after-work life. In order to appropriately participate in retirement life planning, there are a few points that will have to be examined.

Things like strengths and weaknesses and what are the values that guide your life are a couple of the questions you will have to answer for successful retirement life planning. Remember the difference between priorities and values is that priorities can change at a moments notice while values are the way you live your life. Values guide your actions and help determine what priorities are important.

Rekindling Passions In Life

Part of retirement life planning is to find out what activities you had to give up during all the years spent on the job. Many folks had passions before the reality of living came into the picture and the dreams were put on hold, planning to rekindle them once time allowed. With retirement approaching there is no better time than to rekindle the passions that sparked a dream and now the time is available to live out those dreams.

After a number of years on the job, there is experience that can be shared with others just beginning their work phase of life. By sharing management skills with others they can learn from you and you can feel the gratification of helping others. Many volunteer positions are also available to help others and for many, retirement life planning involves helping in the medical field. Whatever the experience it can be useful to others and can help keep a retiree’s life active and meaningful.

Hawaii - Honaunau - Swimming with the Dolphins

Honaunau - Swimming With The Dolphins

If you are an experienced snorkeller and enjoy swimming in deep water, one of the best places to swim with dolphins in the wild on the Big Island of Hawaii is at Honaunau. Before going there be sure to check the surf report by calling the weather line at 961-5582, if there is a high surf warning wait for another day.

hawaii-dolfin-1.jpg

On the Kona side of the island drive down Highway 11 and turn at Highway 160 towards the ocean and Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, better known as the Place of Refuge. Just before the entrance to the park turn right, down the one way road across from a small school. Free parking is along the road when available, if not available there is a dirt parking lot on the right just after you turn onto the one way road. There is a wooden box on a tree where the fee of a few dollars can be deposited, it is the honor system and the money is donated to a small church nearby. You will know that you are at the right place by the flat lava rock type beach where you will see lots of people sitting and in the water. Spinner dolphins pass through this area quite frequently, it is not garanteed that you will see them as they are wild and there are no tour guides involved.

hawaii-dolphin-5.jpg

Spinner dolphins are one of the two most popular dophins found in the waters of Hawaii. They are also the smallest of Hawaii’s common dolphins, between five and six feet in length and weigh 130 to 200 pounds. Hawaii has its own subspecies that can be recognized by its tri-color, silvery pattern consisting of a dark gray on their backs, a stripe of lighter gray on their sides and a white belly. They get there name from their amazing habit of leaping out of the water and spinning many times in the air on their tails before falling back in! Dolphins are very social creatures that depend on social interaction for the purposes of hunting prey, defense and reproduction. Spinner dolphins tend to form long-lasting groups that range in size from as many as 40 which is called a pod and they tend to feed at night on smaller species found in deeper waters.

hawaii-dolphin-3.jpg

They are also known to have rigid hierarchies of power with a few individuals considered dominant. Large groups can be mixed in age and sex, while smaller groups are usually of three types. The nuclear group, consisting of one adult male and female, the nursery group, consisting of a number of females and children and the bachelor group consisting of adult and younger males. The interesting thing is that all dolphins seem to work together as a team when either finding food, mates or caring for their children. Dolphins feed mainly on schools of prey and most species search for food as a group which is better than searching alone and allows them to scan a larger area.

hawaii-gary-with-dolfin-2.jpg

Our latest encounter took place in March of 2008 when we were on our annual vacation to The Big Island. When we arrived at Hounaunau about 10:00 a.m. we saw the dolphins swimming in the bay and swam out about 100 feet to where they were. The water is so deep that you can not see the bottom, just the rays of the sun shining into the beautiful deep blue abiss. There were 2 pods, 41 dophins in total including several babies. They were so beautiful, and seem to submerge rather than swim up towards us. They were very sociable, staying close to the surface of the water and interacting with us quite a bit, all the while chattering amongst themselves.

hawaii-dolphin-2.jpg

Some of them were swimming together, belly to belly. They seemed to be in pairs and the young were always swimming close to an adult. They would always make sure they were between us and their young when approching us. Some of them would look right into our eyes when they came up beside us. It was an incredible experience so if you are lucky enough to be there when the dolphins come in, this is a totally natural experience and you should consider yourself to be very fortunate. Please remember that certain etiquette applies when swimming with dolphins; do not touch them, it can put them at risk and it is illegal. The slimy coating on a dolphin protects it from infection and is easily rubbed off with a hand, glove or foot. Don’t use gloves when snorlelling, this will reduce the temptation to touch and also remember that any wild animal can bite, body slam or pull you underwater if feeling threatened.
