5 Tips To Find A Kid Friendly Dentist

Thanks! Share it with your friends!

Getting regular dental care for your kids is important.  However, visiting the dentist can be a stressful experience for both adults and kids alike, especially if you’ve had a bad dental experience.  That’s why it’s so important to find a kid friendly dentist for your kids!

How do you find the perfect dentist for your kids?

Look For A Pediatric Dentist

If you live in a metropolitan area, you may be able to find a pediatric dentist for your children.  In our area, there are many pediatric dental practices to choose from.  In the rural area where we lived a few years ago, it was difficult to find a dentist much less a pediatric dentist.

A pediatric dentist  is a dentist who has specialized in the area of pediatric dentistry.  According to the pediatric dentist I spoke with, this meant that they had to take extra courses in pediatrics and gain experience working with children.

Keep Comfort In Mind

As the staff about their procedures and protocol.  How do they handle pain management?  How do they deal with nervous, young patients?  Are they qualified to administer sedation to your child should the need arise?

Another thing to consider is the office hours of the dental office. Do they have early morning and after school hours? What about Saturday hours? This is important as it can be difficult for children to miss school to go to their dental appointments.

Ask For Referrals

One of the best ways to find a great dentist for your children is to ask people who have children which dentist they use.  Most people will be glad to recommend a dentist or recommend that you avoid a certain dentist.  This is very helpful.

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

Pay attention to the waiting room!  I know it sounds silly, but if you have children, this is an important item to consider.  Is the waiting room full of magazines and chairs or does it have some toys and kid friendly items to keep kids amused while they are waiting?

Keeping your kids busy and happy while they are waiting goes a long way to minimizing dental phobias and nervousness!  This is so important.

Friendly Staff Can Make or Break The Visit

This is another important thing to consider.  Are staff members pleasant and friendly?  Do they talk to the children instead of talking “down” to them?  Are they able to explain dental procedures in kid friendly terms? Do they allow parents in the exam room with their children? Finally, do they handle scared and stressed children with patience and understanding?

Yes, it is a lot of work to find a good dentist for your children.  However, all that work does have a significant payoff.  When your children don’t mind going to the dentist, it makes life a lot easier for you and for them. Remember that as you are working to find the perfect dentist!
