This book contains all the essays and reviews that W. H. Auden wrote during the years when he was living in England, and also includes the full original versions of his two illustrated travel books, Letters from Iceland (written in collaboration with Louis MacNeice) and Journey to a War (written in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood). Auden's early prose ranges from extravagant indiscreet travel diaries through sharply observed critiques of writers from John Skelton to Winston Churchill. It includes studies of communism and Christianity; audaciously wide-ranging essays on literature, psychology, and politics; and writings about gossip, sex, prisons, and schools. This book contains all the essays and reviews that W. We tend to imagine that planning might actually take away from the relaxing break from routine that vacation is supposed to represent. Nothing could be further from the truth.brbrTake this travel story. Trudy, Paul, and their two kids, Phoebe and Eric, wanted to take a break for a long weekend from their hectic, demanding lives in a busy suburb outside Chicago. It was late November; the warm months of summer were all but a distant memory and the cold midwestern winter was hunkering down for a long stay. Paul came home one evening from work and announced to Trudy and the kids that he had just bought four tickets on a discount airline to Florida.brbrTrudy said, "Where are we staying?" "I'm not sure yet," replied Paul. "We'll find something when we get there."brbrThe family of four packed lightly and jumped on a flight to Florida the next morning. They arrived in the Fort Lauderdale airport to discover it overflowing with people. Trudy looked at Paul and said, "It's not even spring break. What's going on?"brbrThey soon found out that there was an enormous convention taking place throughout the city. Not only were there no rental cars available, but there was barely a hotel room open. The dreamy long weekend of sun and fun that Paul had imagined had suddenly turned@RÁë...¸R ¾Û€

Kathryn was sure she wouldn't be homesick while staying with Aunt Laura's family all summer while her folks were in India. Her cousins had promised Aunt Laura would tell stories to help pass the time, stories of foreign countries she had visited, even some in Africa. Pictures of lions and zebras, mountains and deserts, ancient cities and pyramids, and black Africans and white-robed Arabs flashed across her mind. This might be an interesting summer even if she couldn't go to India. It was.

DIVJourney into the world of book collecting with the Goldstones-rediscover the joy of reading, laugh, and fall in love with books all over again.brbrThe idea that books had stories associated with them that had nothing to do with the stories inside them was new to us. We had always valued the history, the world of ideas contained between the covers of a book or, as in the case ofiThe Night Visitor,/isome special personal significance. Now, for the first time, we began to appreciate that there was a history and a world of ideas embodied by the books themselves.br/divDIVRarest of all, Nancy] Goldstone can write. An American woman and an Australian man set out to explore and perform on the giant musical instruments covering the continent of Australia: fences. In pursuit of their instruments, including the Rabbit-Proof Fence and the 3300-mile long Dingo Fence, the duo survive several boggings, a fly plague, a flea infestation, deadly snakes and crocodiles, heatstroke, floods, storms, bush fires, and their own ignorance. They travel 25,000 miles, engaging with a flying priest, an auctioneer, an Aboriginal gumleaf virtuoso, the first piano in Central Australia, a singing dingo, fence runners, and other colorful bush personalities. They enjoy al fresco meals washed down with fine Australian wines as they discover the colors of sky and earth, the songs of birds, and the essential virtues of the fly veil. Their travelogue, by turns bent and philosophical, includes a bonus DVD of 40 outback fence performances, 88 color photos, and fence music and birdsong transcriptions.
